Membership at St. James: a new conversation starts tonight!

What does it mean to be part of our community? Whether you’re ready to sign up or just starting to consider membership, please come on out to our once-a-month gatherings! We’ll be offering five sessions as a chance for anyone who is interested. Learn a little bit more about the life of our congregation while you get to know other new and long-time friends of the St. James community. Each candidate will be paired with a current member at St. James as a mentor. We will meet Jan. 31, 2012, and every third Tuesday, February through May 2012, from 7:00-8:30pm at church. If you feel ready to become a member at the end of the class, you will officially join St. James UCC on Pentecost Sunday, May 27. Please talk with Pastor Rachael if you’re interested or if you have any questions.

We are also exploring the possibility of rescheduling the class to Sundays after church, so please let Pastor Rachael know if you could attend more easily at the alternate time.

As always, child care can be provided during any church meeting, class, or activity ~ just let the leader know with two days’ notice or more if possible.

Jesus and Money: Tonight!

At 7:00pm on Monday Jan. 30 we’ll continue our Lazarus at the Gate class, a Bible discussion group focused on the topic of economic discipleship. Jesus talked about money more than any other topic in the Gospels! And if you know where to look (sometimes it’s cattle instead of coins), there’s a whole lot of Scripture about wealth: getting it, getting rid of it, and everything in between.

The class is based on an ecumenical curriculum started by Gary VanderPol and built on my many more contributors. You can check out the related blog — it’s full of great ideas and resources. I found out about the materials through another excellent resource for Christian discipleship, the Boston Faith and Justice Network.

Our experience in a 10-member group at St. James has been far beyond what we expected, giving birth to a new mission with some working-poor families in our area as we begin to understand the struggles and realities of their daily lives. It has also impacted the way each of us views our own stewardship. We’ll be starting another session later this year, so be sure to let Pastor Rachael know if you’re interested!

New Interim Organist to Join St. James’ Ministry

We are pleased and very grateful to welcome Mrs. Donna Pinto to our worship ministry at St. James beginning this week! Donna has agreed to assist us as a long-term interim musician as we begin the search for a new Minister of Music. This will provide us with stability and continuity so that we can focus more resources on our search. Donna will be playing piano and organ for Sunday services and directing the choir; she is also potentially available for weddings and other special services. Donna has a long resume of full-term and substitute church music experience, and she currently works full-time as a computer programmer. She was part of the team that created the hymnal for the Presbyterian Church (USA). She lives right here in Limerick! Please welcome Donna to our St. James family.

Membership at St. James UCC: When is the right time?

You may have recently discovered our community, or you may have been attending for several months; yet, it’s still not “official” — you haven’t become a member at St. James. People contemplate membership in a congregation for a variety of reasons, and it is not our practice to pressure new friends to join our church. You are welcome here whoever you are, and wherever you are in your spiritual journey. However, if you are interested in learning more about what it means to be a member of our church, you are invited to a 5-month series of classes on a variety of topics related to membership. Come in and find out what we have to offer, and learn more about your own faith in the process. We will meet Jan. 31, 2012, and every Third Tuesday, February through May 2012, from 7:00-8:30pm at church. New members will have an opportunity to join our church on Pentecost Sunday, May 27.
